Causes of diarrhea: menstruation

Summary

About a third of women experience diarrhea around the time of their period. So, if you’re one of them, rest assured it’s totally normal.12

Although it’s not fully understood, it’s believed that the hormonal changes taking place during your period are the cause of menstrual-related diarrhea.

In particular, the culprit could be a chemical called prostaglandin, which is released during menstruation. Prostaglandin causes the muscles in your bowels to contract and this may lead to diarrhea and stomach pain when you get your period.14
